Clients & boundaries

The Mentor Chair · Clients & boundaries

What if a client asks for something I don't know how to do?

The situation

The request is outside what you've done before, and the client is waiting on an answer.

From the mentor chair

Be honest.

Educate yourself. Ask for help. Practice. And recognize when something is outside your current skill level.

Don't promise a result simply because you're afraid of looking inexperienced.

As experience grows, professional judgment grows with it — but experience should also make you more aware of your limitations.

Mentor principle

Confidence isn't pretending you know everything. It's knowing what you know and being honest about what you don't.

Behind-the-chair tip

Never let ego make promises your skill set can't keep.

What I'd do next
